{"id":11461,"date":"2019-04-25T14:48:41","date_gmt":"2019-04-25T14:48:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/v3it.com\/blog\/?p=11461"},"modified":"2019-04-25T14:48:48","modified_gmt":"2019-04-25T14:48:48","slug":"true-insights-more-than-lipstick-on-a-pig","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/v3it.com\/blog\/true-insights-more-than-lipstick-on-a-pig\/","title":{"rendered":"True Insights: More than lipstick on a pig"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building an\nAnalytics Foundation that provides Business Value and Data Integrity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; By\nKim Burky, V3iT Business Transformation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; December\n18, 2018<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analytical\ninsights are critical to business operations and strategy.&nbsp; However, there are several recent surveys\nthat reveal that many decision makers don\u2019t have confidence in the information\nthey are receiving. &nbsp;Today\u2019s business\nintelligence market offers a plethora of analytics tools both on-premise and in\nthe cloud that extend capabilities to provide both traditional and self-service\nanalytics.&nbsp; In addition, digital tools\noffer the enticing prospect of being able to chug through volumes of data to\nfind the proverbial \u201cneedle in a haystack\u201d and determine patterns for powerful\npredictive and prescriptive capabilities.&nbsp; There are increasing data business roles\nevolving in many organizations such as data officers and data scientists.&nbsp; These offer great possibilities for data\nadvancements but, if an organization doesn\u2019t have a solid data management\nstrategy and a workforce that is ready for these changes, it all becomes\n\u201clipstick on a pig\u201d-colorful visualizations, dashboards and reports that could\nprovide irrelevant or inaccurate data or sometimes both.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can be\noverwhelming to figure out where to begin but it is often helpful to start with\nCovey\u2019s quote \u201cBegin with the end in mind\u201d.&nbsp;\nThe Holy Grail of any implementation is to achieve alignment between\nbusiness and technical strategy and resources, so the first step of the data\njourney is to pull those resources together and collaboratively create an\norganizational data vision that embraces diverse perspectives.&nbsp; When you determine the ultimate destination\nthat is best for your unique organizational data requirements, the strategy becomes\nthe roadmap that gets you there (with everyone in the same vehicle).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Your data vision strategy should include\nthe following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The North Star: A mission statement\nof the organization and what types of insights are most critical to achieving\nthat mission.&nbsp; This is helpful in\ncreating alignment across business entities on priorities.&nbsp; This is also helpful in determining where\nthere should be common analytics assets where data is validated and properly secured\nthat leads the\norganization to a shared view.<\/li><li>Types of Data: There should be a\nhigh-level definition of the types of data in the organization that includes\ndefinitions for sensitive data and the granularity at which it must be\nprotected, as well as transparent data (often defined by law\/policy in\nindustries such as public sector).&nbsp; It\nshould strive to identify and define all relevant data, regardless of the\nsource. <\/li><li>Types of Users:&nbsp; What are your user personas?&nbsp; What data do they need? How do they interact\nwith it? How data savvy are they? What frequency do they need it?
